The mission of the We’re Here Project is to empower and amplify the voices of young Black women in our community. In Southwest Missouri, there are still strides to be made with representation, diversity, and equity and the goal of this project is to raise the visibility of young Black women who wish to be a part of that conversation. Each woman selected for the project gets to share her story and perspective on beauty and strength as a Black woman in the Southwest Missouri area. This is Janelle’s interview:
Beauty is the inner part of you that shines and can light up any room. Beauty is confidence, strength, and love.
I’m a wife & mother to two (almost three) beautiful boys. My career is in HR. When I’m not at work I’m spending as much time as possible with my family. Their happiness means everything to me.
College, I attended Evangel University for my undergrad degree.
Currently I’m not.
My experience has been that it is hard being a black women in this area. Without the support of my fellow black women I would have left for a more diverse city a long time ago. The black woman carries a lot, for her family, her career, and many other things. It’s easy to feel unseen, unheard, and undervalued here.
Keeping my self surrounded by beautiful black women who can help lift my spirits during hard times. I’m also trusting God to do what only he is capable of doing, healing this broken world.
