Interview with Kiara
Kiara booked her photoshoot to re-energize and refill her own cup after constantly giving to others in her daily life. We spent the evening at Busiek State Park so we could do a styled shoot with a beautiful dress in the water as well as get photos of her everyday looks while surrounded by nature.
After her session, I interviewed her on her experience and why she decided to book a photoshoot.
What is your definition of beauty?
I know it’s an overused answer but I think beauty is in who you are. Just because you don’t look like the people you see in magazines or on Television does not mean you aren’t beautiful. Your most beautiful moments are the ones you don’t see yourself. When you are laughing or feeling true joy.
I have struggled to see beauty in myself for a while now but then when I get my definition of beauty I feel like a hypocrite. It’s so easy to get caught up in the outer beauty. It’s so easy to compare yourself to everyone else.
What about the woman you are today makes you uniquely powerful?
I am a domestic abuse survivor. I am a sexual assault survivor. I am a strong independent single mom. Everyday I strive to be the person I want my daughter to see me as.
I booked a photoshoot with Cory Powell Photography because I want to celebrate that I am surviving. Each day gets easier than the last. I want to celebrate the person I am becoming everyday. I want to celebrate the hardest choice of my life, leaving fake love to love myself.
When was the last time you invested in yourself? What did you do?
Investing in myself versus others is one of my biggest struggles. My last investment must have been just having dinner with a friend. It sounds so small but finding time to socialize is hard sometimes. You get so caught up in life and work and you fall through the cracks.
Why are beautiful photos important for you right now?
I want to have these moments frozen in time to look back on and see how far I have come and how far I still have to go.
Why would you recommend others have this experience and book a photoshoot as well?
It was almost like I had known Cory for years. I have struggled with self confidence for a while but he made me so comfortable. I remember during the shoot he showed me a few of the pictures and I couldn’t believe it was me.
The image I see in the mirror does not capture us the way the world sees us. We don’t have a way to see the most beautiful moments without a camera. Some of my favorite pictures are of me laughing (sometimes they would start off fake but they always ended up real). Those are moments I don’t see of myself standing in the mirror.
