Glamography Magazine aims to feature everyday women and their stories. Our mission is to give these women the opportunity to break out of their day-to-day, get glammed up a little, and celebrate their true, authentic selves. This is Michelle's feature from the Summer 2024 issue of Glamography:
In the heart of Springfield, Missouri, Michelle’s journey with APO Community Health (APO) reflects a deep commitment to community and compassion. Her story, interwoven with her professional career in the beauty industry, highlights the transformative power of empathy, dedication, and unwavering support for those in need.
A Lipstick with a Purpose
Michelle’s involvement with APO began during her decade-long tenure as the manager of MAC Cosmetics in Springfield. The MAC Viva Glam program, which aimed to end the HIV epidemic, became a cornerstone of her work. “The tagline was saving lives one lipstick at a time,” Michelle recalls. “All the money from the sale of those specific lipsticks went to the MAC AIDS Fund, which in turn supported various organizations.”
Through this program, Michelle forged a strong relationship with APO, channeling significant funds into the local community. “We would write grants, for donation matching and if granted, they would receive large checks. Sometimes $20,000 or more for one event and another $8,000 to $15,000 or so for another event annually to match their efforts of their raised donation dollars 100%.” Her dedication to ensuring these donations were maximized laid the groundwork for a partnership that would span over a decade.
Evolving Missions and Expanding Reach
Initially, APO’s mission focused on supporting those affected by HIV and AIDS. However, as the organization grew, so did its scope. “Now, it's a full medical clinic,” Michelle explains. “They also provide full service care to specialize in meeting the needs for the LGBTQ+ community in a safe and inviting environment. Providing care which is not widely understood around here is the heart of this organization, and they are excellent at what they do.” This expansion reflects the evolving needs of the community with an emphasis on providing APO’s commitment to addressing those needs comprehensively.
Michelle’s role within APO has also evolved. After leaving MAC, she joined the board and now serves as the president of the Board of Directors. “It's pretty cool to have come this far with them. They used to be in a much smaller building and they keep expanding. APO has another expansion coming up soon.”
Building for the Future
APO’s upcoming expansion promises to significantly enhance their capabilities. “The building will be much larger,” Michelle says, excitement evident in her voice.
“We want to house a couple of mobile units because they want to be able to travel and make a bigger impact for outlying, smaller communities. APO also has satellite services in Joplin and West Plains and serves those communities proving the same level of dignified care to clients in those areas. The new building expansion will address many needed issues and will be amazing.” The recent acquisition of the Grove Pharmacy attached to APO on Glenstone Avenue further supports their commitment to a holistic, one-stop-shop approach for clients.
A Lifelong Commitment
Michelle’s journey with APO spans nearly 14 years, beginning in 2010. “After starting my employment with MAC I started volunteering almost immediately,” she recalls. “I got my entire staff at MAC excited about it, and we all volunteered multiple times a year.” This hands-on involvement solidified her connection to the clients and the cause, ensuring that her departure from MAC didn’t sever these ties.
“The stories of what they've gone through and the struggles clients have faced are impressionable. APO is in a great place now, one where we don't lose clients like we used to, and even I've been able to witness that improvement in my relatively short time of being associated with APO! It's pretty awesome,” Michelle reflects.
Balancing Beauty and Advocacy
Striking a balance between her work in the beauty industry and her advocacy with APO presents unique challenges. “It's a struggle because you never want anyone to feel like they need to be fixed,” Michelle acknowledges. “But there's a level of confidence that can be built through transformation, especially with makeup.”
Her commitment to helping people feel comfortable in their own skin extends beyond aesthetics. “Clients often tell me how safe and comforting the environment I provide is, and that's very important to me.” My makeup studio and Esthetics practice are safe spaces for all who enter our doors at VIP Esthetics & Hair.
A Midlife Renaissance
Michelle’s professional journey took a significant turn when she joined MAC at 36, following more than a decade of managing various businesses. “I wasn't sure about the beauty industry, but I went for it, and they took a chance on turning a manager into a makeup artist. I'm glad they did because it allowed me to be creative professionally.”
Her decision to pursue aesthetics further expanded her passion for beauty and self-care. “When I left MAC Cosmetics, I went straight to aesthetic school. The coincidence that I was timing that transition right before the pandemic was honestly perfect, as i was able to complete my hands-on training before the shutdown and receive my diploma as a Licensed Esthetician (LE) just in time to hone my space at VIP Esthetics & Hair while gearing up for the re-open of businesses post Covid.
Advice for Midlife Career Starters
For those considering a career change in middle age, Michelle emphasizes the importance of a strong support system. My family and friends & makeup clients were my biggest cheerleaders . “If you can invest in yourself, whether through student loans or other means, go for it. It's stressful to start something new, but if you believe in it, it's worth it.”
Her own transition was facilitated by her existing reputation in the beauty industry. “I already had a lot of clout in the beauty industry, which helped. Not everyone comes out of school with a full client list, but I was blessed with supportive clients who followed me from makeup to aesthetics.”
Looking Ahead
Michelle’s journey with APO and her career in the beauty industry illustrate a profound dedication to community, empathy, and personal growth. Her story serves as an inspiration to those seeking to make a difference, reminding us all of the transformative power of compassion and commitment.
As she continues to balance her roles and expand her impact, Michelle’s journey reflects the beauty of resilience and the importance of staying true to one’s passions and values. “I turned 50 this year, & I’m still getting comfortable with admitting that, but i feel like I’m in my best era and ready to embrace this phase of my life. I want to share the things that make me feel confident with others. I believe that some level of regular self-care is imperative for most of us to feel capable to pour care into others.” Whether through a lipstick or a listening ear, Michelle’s contributions to the community are a testament to the power of empathy and the enduring impact of genuine care.
