Glamography Magazine aims to feature everyday women and their stories. Our mission is to give these women the opportunity to break out of their day-to-day, get glammed up a little, and celebrate their true, authentic selves. This is Nikki's feature from the upcoming issue of Glamography:
I’m originally from the Bronx. My parents moved to Missouri. It was a big culture shock moving here, and I have considered moving back but the cold winters are treacherous there. I feel like I’m a mix of the two cultures I come from - the Bronx and Springfield. I still have some of that free spirit vibe from New York. It’ll always be a part of me.
I’m a nurse now but I originally studied interior design in college. I couldn't find a job with that degree so I decided to work at Mercy hospital.
I started in the central supply area and moved to the operating room. I started taking night classes so I could move up to my current role. I honestly couldn't see myself doing anything else.
I have now worked at Mercy Hospital for 24 years. I do IVs all day and have worked in the Operating Room with the Anesthesia Dept for many years. Like most jobs, it has its moments but I love what I do.
I have A 23 year old daughter that graduated from college and now lives on her own. She’s doing the adult thing and I couldn't be more proud of the woman she is becoming today. I was not a perfect parent, but I strived to do the best I could, and with the help of my mother and my sister, my dad and my aunt and uncle and a tribe of friends, we raised a great young woman.
I have been a type one diabetic since the age of 8. Now, I’m fighting cancer. I had surgery on February 9 to remove my total thyroid, a tumor in my neck, and cancer in my lymph nodes and nodules. I refuse to let a sickness keep me from living life each day and making the best of each day. I have a faith and belief in God, bigger than a lot of people ever could know.
So each day I wake up, it's a new day to smile and to make someone else smile.
I will heal from my surgery and do six weeks of radiation myself. I love tattoos so I'll be looking forward to getting something to cover up the scar from the surgery. Stay tuned for my next photoshoot to see the new ink!
