Glamography Magazine aims to feature everyday women and their stories. Our mission is to give these women the opportunity to break out of their day-to-day, get glammed up a little, and celebrate their true, authentic selves. This is Laura's interview from the upcoming issue of Glamography:
CORY: Okay so you know I like asking these big questions [laughs]. This is always a hard one but can you tell us a little of your story?
LAURA: I was born and raised in Springfield, MO and I work as a nurse! My parents are from Taiwan, and they immigrated here in the ‘80s. Being the only Chinese girl in my school, I struggled with my identity, let alone trying to figure out womanhood on top of that. Over the years, I have really grown into the person I am most proud of. My goal in life is to be someone that my younger self would look up to, and I feel confident in saying that I have achieved that.
Being a first generation born Asian American, I feel a strong sense in needing to help represent my culture in an area where Asians are in the minority. All of my life I had struggled with this sense of not being “Asian enough” or not being “American enough.” These struggles are so uniquely felt by minorities, and when I was a kid, it caused me so much stress because all I wanted was to fit in. Fast forward to being 26, and I am actually SO proud of the woman I have become, and I hope to be a model for other Asian American little girls in my area to look up to.
CORY: What is YOUR definition of beauty?
LAURA: My definition of beauty feels much deeper than what is seen on the surface. When I think of beauty I think of deep empathy and kindness for others. I strive to match this definition everyday. I am a nurse, and it is incredibly important to me that my patients feel like they can confide in me and be met with empathy and kindness, especially when they are going through hardship.
“This photoshoot was something I never thought was something I would do, but it turned out to be everything that I needed.”
CORY: Why did you decide to book your photoshoot?
LAURA: Every girl needs a day to just glam up and have a photoshoot just because! The world expects so much of us as women; having a day to just pamper yourself to the fullest extent was so fun.
CORY: So I often talk about most of my clients being super nervous before their session… which wasn’t really the case for you. Can you tell us a little about what your experience was like?
LAURA: There really wasn’t anything that I was nervous for! I was mostly very excited to try something like this. My photoshoot felt so laid back and carefree. Lots of laughs were shared and you made me feel like a natural in front of the camera, even though I had never done something like this before!
CORY: What was it like when you saw your photos for the first time?
LAURA: Two words… Absolutely elated! I immediately fell in love with them and had so much a hard time choosing my favorites!
CORY: Why would you recommend others have this experience and book their very own photoshoot too?
LAURA: This photoshoot was something I never thought was something I would do, but it turned out to be everything that I needed
Every woman deserves to have photos of themselves that encompasses their own unique beauty! Cory has a special eye for the camera and because of his photography, I was able to see my beauty in a completely different light, and it made me love myself that much more!
